Sixth Church Targeted Friday in HVAC Thefts

web posted April 9, 2011

WESTSIDE – Another church has fallen victim of metal thefts that have continued across the county recently. Cedar Grove Baptist Church, which just finished a three day revival that ended on Thursday night, was the latest victim. A church member found the HVAC unit missing Friday afternoon. This make the sixth church targeted since the last week of January and the seventh theft with one church targeted twice in addition to the Merriwether Fire Station earlier this week.

The 4-ton HVAC unit was stolen by being dragged through a chain link fence enclosure and was dragged a considerable distance from the rural church before being loaded and taken away from the scene.

The value and the damage caused is estimated at approximately $7,000.

Cedar Creek Church is located on Old Five Notch Road just off Lanham Road. It is believed that the crime took place between 9:30 pm Thursday night and 1 pm Friday. The Sheriff's Office got the call of the theft just after 4 pm Friday. The Crime Scene Investigator was called to process the scene for evidence.

With Friday's theft, the total loss now has topped $60,000 and is nearing $70,000 in just over two months.

Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey has stepped up patrol checks of the dozens of rural churches in the county, but with only three patrol deputies covering the 507 square mile county per shift they have been unable to capture the person or persons responsible.

According to information provided at this time, the person or persons responsible are stealing the HVAC units at all hours of the day and night, making it more difficult for them to catch those responsible due to the random nature of the crimes.
