Gone Phishing

By George Craig
web posted May 18, 2015

TECH PROFESSOR – My very first article was about email and spam but there are so many more dangers out there. According to the Canadian website www.getcybersafe, 156 Million phishing emails are sent everyday but only about 16 Million make it through email filters. Of the 16 Million only 8 million are opened and only 800,000 links are clicked. All in all about 80,000 people fill out the personal information request and get taken.

Now Google did a study at the end of 2014 on phishing and found that on average 35% of phishing sites target email account information and 21% were after banking information. Google also said in the study that 20% of all the compromised Gmail email accounts were logged into within 30 minutes of being phished and the top countries for the hijackers were China, Ivory Coast, Malaysia, Nigeria and South Africa.
Google had said that between 2012 and 2013 about nine email hijackings happened per day per Million email accounts. Now lets do some math. Google at that time had around 500 Million users so at nine hijackings per 1 Million that comes to about 4,500 Gmail email accounts being hacked and hijacked everyday.
Ok, so lets put this into perspective. Yes that means more math. The 4,500 email accounts were just Gmails. That does not take in account the thousands of other email providers in the world. Best estimates is there are four Billion email accounts worldwide. Now lets play with the numbers. For the four Billion email accounts in the world, if we use Google’s numbers as an average across the board, 9 per 1 Million that’s 900 per 100 Million users and that turns into 9000 email accounts per 1 Billion and then multiple that by 4 and we end with 36,000 email accounts that get hacked and hijacked everyday. Now that's a heavy workload.
At this point if you’re still reading I want to take a moment and thank you. Now you’re thinking what does this have to do with anything. I’ll tell you what. Protection. Last week alone I helped about 30 people that had their email accounts hijacked and 8 of those people had their bank accounts wiped out.

Protecting yourself, your information and your computers are of paramount importance. Have a good anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spyware program(s) on your computer and learn as much as you can about how to avoid these kinds of things. Its out there and it happens more than you think. Don’t let it happen to you.
I have taken the time to add an educational page to my website www.thetechpro.net. You’ll find links to some games and other educational material about web safety. Check it out and as always if you have any questions you can always ask me by going to my site and click on Contact Us and fill out the form or just call.

Until next week, class dismissed.
