Tips and Tricks

TECH PROFESSOR Ė I get asked a lot for tips and tricks to help with Internet, Computers, TVís, Phones, Tablets and all kinds of things. I never wrote any of them down before but always thought I should. So here it is.

Internet
Step 1: Restart your device (computer, tablet or phone) then try the internet.
Step 2: Find your modem for your internet and unplug the power cord and count to 10 and then plug it back in. Just the power cord. Then if you have a router unplug the power cord to it and count to 10 and then plug that back in. Again just the power cord.
Step 3: Check all the connections. You donít need to unplug anything after the power. Just make sure everything is plugged in nice and secure.
Step 4: If your internet is still not working call your internet service provider (ISP). They may ask you to do this all over again. Let them walk you through the steps. Itís their job.

Tip 1: To watch anything online like Netflix or to Skype, you want to have a minimum internet speed of 3 Mbps (Megabits Per Second) or higher for better quality.
Tip 2: Not everyone needs 50-100 Mbps. Think about what you do on the internet. If you just check email, surf and look at facebook then 3Mbps should be good. If you watch Netflix and play any games I recommend at least 12 Mbps. That should allow you to watch videos without them stopping to buffer all the time.

Cable/Satellite
Step 1: Make sure your TV is on the correct input/ source or channel to get the signal from the box.
Step 2: Unplug the box for a count of ten and then plug it back in. Don't try to turn it on right away. Give it a few minutes then turn it on.
Step 3: Check all of the connections at the back of the TV and box. Tightening loose connections can improve picture quality in a lot of cases.
Step 4: If your remote stops working correctly like some buttons stop working then try changing the batteries.
Tip 1: Patients. Sometimes you have to have some patients. Give it five or six minutes before or after doing anything.
Tip 2: If does not work the first time then give a few minutes and try again.
Tip 3: Know what you have. Know as much about your TV and connections as you can.

Customer service/ Tech support
Tip 1: You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Be nice and instead of yelling, give them a sob story. It works trust me.
Tip 2: be patient. If they ask you to do something you've already not just do it again. Remember they're just doing their job.
Tip 3: Know how to use your stuff. They don't know how everything ever made works. That's not their job. Their job is to help you with the products and services that their company provides. So keep in mind you may have to make phone calls to more than one company.
