Extra, Extra - Everything Connects

By George Craig
web posted April 27, 2015

TECH PROFESSOR – Some would say that the smart phone is no longer a phone at all. Seeing how some people use it I would agree, but it has become a communication platform for so much. This week we'll look at some of the extras you can get to go along with your phone.
A bluetooth headset or handsfree headset is a great tool for the busy multitasker. They are also great for driving, leaving your hands free to hold the steering wheel. These devices can also be great for instance when you're working out. They make many of the Bluetooth headsets that enable you to stream music from your smartphone. A bluetooth headset can cost from $20.00 to $300.00 based on your needs.

Today most new smart phones have a chip for near field communication. Near field communication or NFC is the ability for two or more devices to communicate when in a close proximity to one another. A close proximity generally being a few inches. So you download an app and add your credit or debit card to it and paying becomes as easy as swiping your phone across a pad at the register. With a feature like this you can expect a lot of questions about security and it all depends on the app and your card and phone of course. Before you do anything with this do your research.

Last but not least is Inferred or IR connections. With this technology you can use your phone as a remote for your TV or blu-ray player. Not all phones have this ability so before you download any apps for this check your phones specs. As the saying goes if you got it use it.

You can do so much from smart phones today like read a book, listen to music, take pictures and video, play games, get on facebook and twitter, order food, yes I said order food, buy movie tickets and anything else you can do on the internet. When the TV ad said there’s an app for that they were making an understatement. What ever you do with your phone just please remember one thing, It’s a phone. Try making a call every once in a while.
Until next week, class dismissed.
