Dead man is suspect in home invasion, investigation continues

web posted July 31, 2010

EDGEFIELD – Sheriff’s Investigators have been working around the clock chasing leads in the death of a man found shot on Hayes Drive Friday night. Sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. Robbie Harter said, “at this time we still have not identified him.” An autopsy was performed Saturday morning in Newberry and the man’s fingerprints were being used in an effort to identify him.

Chief Investigator Randy Doran said the man found dead was shot twice in the arm and once in the chest. “He’s actually one of our suspects,” Lt. Doran said. According to him, there were five people in the Hayes Drive home when reportedly four men entered the back door and made their way to the living room.

At least one of the intruders produced and handgun and gunshots were exchanged between the intruders and those inside the home watching a boxing match. “I don’t have the exact number, but about a dozen rounds were fired,” Lt. Doran said. At least two weapons were used in the exchange of gunfire based on the shell casing found at the scene.

The shooting of the unidentified man appears to have been in self defense at this time.

Lt. Doran said they have not recovered any of the weapons. A small amount of drugs were also recovered from the home.

Investigators were still interviewing witnesses and leads that have been developed overnight during the investigation.

We will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
