Suspected burglar arrested, more charges possibly pending

web posted March 27, 2009
EDGEFIELD – A Waterloo man wanted in connection to several thefts from self-storage units in Trenton has been apprehended. Steven Luther Rodgers, 31, was arrested in Ninety-Six Thursday evening, Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said. Rodgers is wanted for a string of thefts earlier this month at the Trenton Self Storage. A unit allegedly rented by Rodgers at the same location was found to house a motorcycle stolen from a storage unit in Greenwood County.

Inv. Doran arrived at Rodgers’ home around 7 pm where Nintey Six authorities already had Rodgers in custody and discovered a wide assortment of items in the back yard, some of which were items stolen in some of the recent burglaries in Trenton.

“We go the riding lawn mower and the 4-wheeler back,” Inv. Doran said. Several other items were seized including a compressor, mini-tiller, weed eater, and more. Some of the renters of the storage units have not returned to take an inventory of units reported burglarized so it is unknown if any of the other seized property may belong other victims.

The 4-wheeler was recovered from an individual that purchased the ATV from Rodgers and cooperated with authorities, Inv. Doran said.

Inv. Doran said he would also be looking at property lists to the Edgefield Police Department of items stolen in a similar burglary of several storage units in Edgefield during the same time period.

Mr. Rodgers is currently out on bond from a previous grand larceny charge in Greenwood County and is on probation as a result of a burglary and grand larceny conviction.

Additional charges are pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Inv. Doran said Mr. Rodgers has been cooperating with investigators, “but he still hasn’t given us the name of the guy that was with him when he stole the 4-wheeler.” Additional interviews will be conducted with Rodgers on Friday Doran said.
