I Hate Hummingbirds

By Pastor Phillip Howle
web posted July 28, 2010

RELIGION – I really hate birds. I mean they are my kryptonite. Humming birds are the worst! I hate hummingbird feeders. I don’t know why people fill up glass tubes with red Kool-Aid to invite these monsters to come to their house and stick their long sharp beaks in their eyes! This may seem like a strange phobia to some, but I am not alone. After scouring the internet, I found others who agreed with me.

One man wrote “I just looked out the window and noticed a few humming birds circulating around my garden and I fear they will attack me anytime now. I know they are very dangerous creatures and are responsible for the deaths of millions. I have had years of army training but nothing has prepared me for the perils of a humming bird attack.” This brave patriot further went on to share that wearing red near them drives them into a feeding frenzy!  Now, I have not fact checked this, but the death of millions seems a little low to me.

Furthermore, I had an aunt who had a pet cockatoo, which is like a hummingbird, but larger and equally vicious! It would fly around and drive fear into my heart while looking for ways to attack my face and rip off my check and nose for dinner. So you may assume that I myself would never have one of these ferocious mongrels as a pet. But some crazy folks love them. And I guess to each his own on the matter.

But a while back I read about a woman in White Plains NY, whose pet cockatoo had escaped from her house (probably to go eat small children). She, out of love for her bird, chased her pet cockatoo into the woods. She was so intent that she managed to get stuck waist deep in mud. Someone in the area called 911 to report that she was trapped about 150 yards into the woods. Area firefighters responded, along with state and county police. By the time they got to her, she had managed to free herself, uninjured. The Police then added “She thanked everyone for their help and she said, basically, that this will never happen again.”

Sadly the 55-year-old lady still has been unable to catch her escaped bird. It is probably out terrorizing helpless citizens as I write.

Now, why did I tell you all this? Because this lady loved her bird so much and was so determined to catch that bird that she was not going to let anything stop her, not even evidently a waist deep mud hole. She was determined to plod through the mud hole all the way to get her evil bird. Her devotion and determination was impressive.

This story made me question how intense is our love and desire for God?

Jeremiah 29:13 says “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” How many of us feel that we find God daily. I mean daily look to spend time in the presence of God.

The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 42:1 “as the deer pants and longs for water in a drought, so my soul longs after God.” Sadly, we let almost anything get in the way of that. We let sleep; if you got up just 15 minutes earlier you could have some time with God.

We let the radio; cut it off and pray on your ride to work. We let cell phones; cut back on the pointless chatter (or typing) and redeem the time. We let laziness, we let worry, we let stress, you name it. What I am saying is today; strive to spend time with God. I know everyone is busy, but if you look, search, and strive for God, He will provide the time and the opportunities for you. You will always find time to do the things you want to do. So, make the time for God today. No excuses!

Waiting for hate mail from bird lovers to come pouring in! Pastor Phillip
