Rebecca's Potato Soup Recipe
By Pastor Philip Howle
web posted July 7, 2010
RELIGION – Today you get a two for one deal: a
recipe and devotion. Be excited and let’s get going. My wife is a
really good cook. Ask around Antioch. Some folks get sick or have
babies just to get some of her cooking. One of my favorite things she
makes is potato soup. Now on the whole, potato soup sounds kind of
ho-hum. But this recipe is great, or as I like to say “old-lady good.”
Her recipe consists of a few parts.
Boring part: Pealing four cups of potatoes and cutting them in little
pieces
Fun Part: frying 8 slices of bacon. (I just like frying, eating, and
most anything that involves bacon)
Hard Part: Finely dicing 1 cup of onions and then sautéing them
in the left over bacon grease.
Easy Part: Opening 1 can cream of chicken soup, pouring 2 cups of
milk, measuring out 1 cup of sour cream and then dumping them in the
pot all together and stirring.
Boring Part: Slowly bring soup up to temp, then watching it simmer all
afternoon before you can eat it.
Best Part: Eating a bowl of soup.
The wife wanted me to also include:
Chop potatoes and onion and set aside. Fry bacon and
set aside. Add back onions to bacon grease and cook until tender. Add
back potatoes & bacon, add 1 cup water, 1sp salt & 1/8 tsp
pepper & cook until potatoes are tender. Reduce heat & stir in
sour cream, milk, and soup. Heat thoroughly.
Now for Christians, much of our life is lived in similar steps as a pot
of potato soup.
Sometimes we have to go through times of basics and learning. Just like
chopping those potatoes, there is nothing difficult or hard, just life.
Nothing exceptional, nothing tremendous, just life, but each day of
life is valuable and important and each day is planned and designed by
God. Keep in mind Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for
you"--this is the LORD's declaration--"plans for your welfare, not for
disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
Sometimes we go through times when, like chopping those onions, life is
full of tears, and wishing that it was over already. And although it is
hard for us to imagine, even those hard times and tears are part of
God’s design. There is no waste in God’s design for seeing us become
the people who God intends for us to be. Think about Romans 8:28
“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love
God: those who are called according to His purpose.”
Sometimes life is like waiting for the soup to cook. You have done all
you can do and are just waiting and trusting in God to work things in
your life out. During this time, keep Isaiah 40:29-31 in your heart and
mind “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He
increases strength. (30) Even youths shall faint and be
weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; (31) but they
who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up
with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall
walk and not faint.”
Sometimes life is sitting down with a bowl of soup and just taking it
all in. You will have times when living is a breeze and everything is
great. All your hard work is done and you can just sit back and enjoy
everything and live out Ecclesiastes 2:24 “There is nothing better for
man than to eat, drink, and to enjoy his work. I have seen that even
this is from God's hand.”
So, make some soup, enjoy God, and keep close to Him as you head
through life. Remember there are no shortcuts to making soup and you
can’t skip any ingredients if you want a good result. In life each
season and moment is important. Learn through and value each one.
After milking a soup metaphor for all it is worth, I am feeling like
Forrest Gump who said “Life is like a box of chocolates,” and really
wanting a bowl of soup! Pastor Phillip Howle
