Jack Morgan Tiller

COLUMBIA - Funeral service for LTC Jack Morgan Tiller, US Army (Ret), 87, will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Florence National Cemetery, Florence, S.C. at 2:00 p.m. with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Veterans Trust Fund of South Carolina.

LTC Tiller died Wednesday, February 27, 2008. Born in LaFollette, Tenn., he was a son of the late Henry A. and Irene Morgan Tiller. He was a retired Army officer and served during WW II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was highly decorated, winning the Silver Star for his actions as an infantry company commander in the areas of Old Baldy, Pork Chop Hill and T-bone Hill during the Korean War. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation twice and the Meritorious Unit Citation twice as a company commander in Korea.

He received the Army Commendation Medal twice along with ten other medals and ribbons and the Combat Infantry Badge. His overseas assignment included two tours in Korea, two tours in Japan and a tour in Germany. From 1959 to 1965, he coordinated the training of Reserve Forces at Fort Jackson and his last tour of duty was as an Army Advisor to the South Carolina National Guard. Following his retirement from the Army, he was a Veterans Claims Representative at the South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs for 14 years.

LTC Tiller was a member in perpetuity and past Chapter and State Commander of the Military Order of the World Wars, a lifetime member and past Commander of VFW Post 641 and a member of the Columbia Chapter of the Retired Officers Association. He also was a member in perpetuity and past Commander of the Fort Jackson National Sojourners Chapter #184. LTC Tiller was a 32 Degree Mason and was appointed by Governor Beasley to serve as a member of the Advisory Board of Trustees of the Veterans Trust Fund of South Carolina.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Aileen T. Tiller; a son, Jack M. Tiller, Jr. of Johnston, S.C.; a daughter, Dyanne Tiller of Atlanta, Ga.; and loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be loved and missed by all.
