Marvin H. Sears, III

EDGEFIELD - Marvin Hugh Sears, III, 83, of Edgefield, SC passed away after a long illness on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Mr. Sears was born on October 17, 1934 in Augusta, Ga, the son of the late Marvin Hugh Sears, Jr., and Dorothea Waddey Sears Roper.

Funeral Services will be 11 AM Thursday April 26, 2018 at Edgefield United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall.

Mr. Sears was educated at Richmond Academy, in Augusta, Ga and was graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (which later became Auburn University) in the class of 1955 with a degree in Architecture. He attended graduate school at University of Georgia, studying art history. Mr. Sears served as an officer in the United States Navy, with tours in the Mediterranean and Caribbean aboard the USS Furse. As an architect, Mr. Sears designed residences, hospitals, churches, schools, and public buildings including additions to Episcopal Day School in Augusta, Ga, and Edgefield Discovery Center museum. He was a retired partner of Cheatham, Fletcher, Scott, and Sears AIA, in Augusta, Ga.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Sara Potts Sears, his daughter Hannah Sears Gillard (Richard Andre “Bubba”) and granddaughter Sarah Catherine Inabinet Gillard of Mount Pleasant, SC; and by his sister Donna Roper Canada of Augusta, Ga, nieces Noele Hinnant Lang (Chris), Stephania Hinnant Griffin (Chris), and Margaret Canada Gladden (Perry), nephew Christopher Shane Canada, grandnieces and grandnephews Aaron and Evan Lang, Michael Sims, Michelle Sims Kruse (Will), Aralyn Griffin, Victoria and Conner Baldowski, and Kristin Canada, and by many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother-in-law Joseph Robert Canada.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edgefield United Methodist church, P.O. Box 25 Edgefield, SC 29824.

Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
