Burn Victim Undergoes Surgery - Efforts Launched To Assist Family

web posted December 5, 2018

MERRIWETHER - Mr. Jimmy Delaughter, the burn victim from yesterday's fire that completely destroyed his home, underwent surgery today at Doctor's Hospital.  Mr. Delaughter received 2nd and 3rd degree burns in the blaze that also claimed two family pets.  He is currently in stable condition at the ICU Burn Center.  He is in a medically-induced coma, after surgery, but is expected to recover.

According to family members of the victim, a neighbor heard an explosion coming from the direction of the home belonging to Mr. Delaughter at about 2:45 PM.  The explosion was followed by cries for help from the victim.   The neighbor called 911 and went to assist.  He found the home in flames and was in the process of helping Mr. Delaughter from the burning structure when units from the Merriwether Fire Department arrived on the scene.  Merriwether was assisted by units from North Augusta, Belvedere, and  West Side Fire Departments.

The home, built in the 1920's, was a complete loss, as were all of the couple's possessions.  An effort has been launched to help Mr. Delaughter and his wife, Barbara.  Chris Hoffman, who serves as the Chaplin for the Merriwether Fire Department has asked that anyone wishing to help can make out a check to the Fire Department.  If anyone has any questions, he can be reached at 803-341-0558.

There is also an account at SRP Federal Credit Union that will be accepting deposits on their behalf.
