Reported tornado hits Merriwether
web
posted March 29, 2010
MERRIWETHER –
Shortly after the National
Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the Edgefield County area
around 10:20 pm, 911 Dispatchers began receiving calls reporting a
tornado on the ground in the Merriwether area. Trees were reported down
blocking Martintown Road and a report of a roof off a home on Deer
Springs Road. A tree heavily damaged a home on Wildlife Trail forcing
the family to leave the home.
The family on Wildlife Trail said they heard the signature roar of a
tornado shortly before the trees began to fall and hunkered down
inside. After hearing the crash of the tree falling and the road
subsiding they exited the home and went to check on neighbors. “We’re
just glad everybody got out safe,” the man said.

Trees and downed
power lines crisscrossed Martintown from Deer Springs
Road and Garrett Road closing off all traffic for over two hours and
Merriwether Firefighters, SCDOT, and Aiken Electric Co-op cleared the
roadway and repaired downed power lines.
Edgefield County EMA Director Mike Casey said from the scene that he is
unsure if there was an actual tornado or a microburst. “It’s dark, you
really can’t see a lot,” he said. There were indications of several
trees all falling in the same direction, however; there were also
locations, such as the home on Wildlife Trail, where trees fell in
multiple directions. “All I can say at this time is we had a wind
event,” Mr. Casey said.

Sheriff’s Deputies and State Troopers also responded
to the scene to aid in traffic control.
Additional reports of damage also came just to the east on Cheves Creek
and the Moore Road area of downed trees and damages to roofs, though no
serious home damage was reported.
While emergency crews were trying to clear the roads and remove a tree
from a home, an additional warning of another strong line of storms
that was bearing down on the area shortly after midnight was broadcast.
