2-Year-Old Injured after Falling Through Grandstand at STH

web posted September 26, 2011

JOHNSTON – A two-year-old child was injured after falling through the gaps between the bleachers on the home side of the field during Friday night's game between Strom Thurmond and Silver Bluff. According to witness accounts, the young girl fell from the upper portion of the stands and suffered multiple injuries.

How the child came to fall through the bleachers remains unknown. After falling to the ground Edgefield County EMS and others rushed to her aid. She was transported by ambulance to MCG for treatment of her injuries.

Someone close to the family related over the weekend that the 2-year-old suffered a rib fracture, a bruised lung, and a broken wrist. She remained hospitalized at the Children's Medical Center at MCG on Saturday.

School Officials were unable to be contacted over the weekend for comment.

The child is expected to make a full recovery.

Though the school has looked into upgrades to the stands, it is unknown why some type of wire mesh has not been installed to the backs of the aluminum seating stands to prevent objects, much less children, from falling between the gaps in the stadium seating.

"People are always dropping pocketbooks or keys under the stands," one source stated. "This is the first time that I know of it being a child".

According to a source, the family was seated towards the top of the stands in the Booster Club section.
