Counterfeit $20 bills circulating in Johnston

web posted July 23, 2010

JOHNSTON – Counterfeit twenty dollar bills have been turning up at local businesses since the middle of last week and continued through the weekend. Johnston Police have been seizing the bills as evidence and so far seven bills have been discovered. According to three incident reports, all the bills look the same and are smaller than a normal bill.

The first discovery came when a bank teller found three of the fake $20 bills in the deposit from a local convenience store on Wednesday of last week. After the manager notified the other workers it was discovered that a clerk at the store stated someone tried to pass a fake $20 bill the night before and she took it and threw it in the trash. Fortunately the trash had not been emptied and the bill was recovered.

Friday afternoon a local merchant called to report that while he was counting the money to make out a deposit, two of the faked $20 bills were found. The tell-tell sign again was the size and feel of the faked bills.

Twenty minutes later Johnston Police were notified by another local business reporting more of the same fake $20 bills.

Around 5 pm a local restaurant manager told an officer sometime between 6 am and 2 pm that day, someone at the drive-thru window paid for their food with the fake bill. It was not discovered until the register door was being counted. The manager stated he noticed the bill because it was smaller than normal bills. A mark with special pen confirmed the bill was a fake.

At this time no additional bills have been reported, however; business owners should be aware of the bills being circulated.

One of the clerks was able to identify the person who used one of the fake bills and gave that information to the investigator.

The serial number from the bills was not listed on incident reports provided in the case. We will provide more information and a photo of the bills if possible.
