“All God’s Creatures” safe as fire razes building
web
posted May 5, 2008
JOHNSTON -- Cargo
and Toolah sneezed in
the smoke and leaned against the fence as Denise Holcomb caressed their
heads and reassured them that everything was going to be okay. Despite
all the excitement, somehow the dogs were calm. Their home was still
intact as firefighters arrived just before 5 pm Sunday to fight the
blaze that consumed the nearby structure.
An hour ago Holcomb - founder of All God's Creatures - hadn't been sure
what would happen. That's when she looked out the window of her Old
Plank Road home and into the backyard. Something wasn't right. It was
then she realized the barn was on fire.
Fire department crews from Johnston and Trenton screamed to the scene
in a matter of minutes and quickly brought the blaze under control. The
wind had been blowing away from the kennels and All of God's Creatures
on the property were safe.
"The dogs were far enough away, thank goodness, that the heat didn't
get to them," Holcomb said. The three quarters of the barn which was
used by Holcomb's husband Grant as a woodworking shop appeared to have
been totally destroyed. Several items were able to be retrieved from
the opposite end of the structure, which was being utilized as a guest
residence.
"Something just blew
up," Holcomb said. "In an instant flames half as
long as the barn itself were shooting out of the front. But (the fire
departments) got here so fast. They were here in minutes."
The flames did reach one automobile parked nearby which was destroyed
and also damaging a golf cart and lawn mower.
Fire officials said they have not identified a cause for the fire at
this time. One thing was for sure, the barn burned extremely hot. "It
was really burning when we pulled up," said Assistant Chief Mart Adams
of the Johnston Fire Department. "We're not sure how it started right
now."
When asked if any of the food for the dogs kept at the rescue mission
was kept in the barn or damaged, Holcomb instead pointed to a smaller
shed situated further back on the property. All the food was safely
there. Holcomb said she was overwhelmed by the concern of people
passing by.
"People were just stopping by to help and make sure we were okay," she
said. "A couple of guys got here before the fire department and helped
us pull things away from the barn. I don't even know their names, but I
want them to know that we were grateful for their help. We really
appreciated everyone's help."
Johnston Fire Fighters were called back to the scene to extinguish "hot
spots" as the owners were said to be bulldozing the property.
