Driver and Passenger Flee Traffic Stop on Foot: Driver Arrested

JOHNSTON – A Johnston Police Officer on patrol
Saturday just after noon spotted a grey Mercury 4-door traveling on
Edisto Street exceeding the speed limit by 15 mph. When the officer
turned around and attempted to stop the car the driver refused to stop
the chase was on.
The driver turned on to Calhoun Street, running a stop sign, and then
turned on to Bland Avenue. A short distance later the driver and a
passenger jumped from the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
The two men ran towards Aiken Avenue with the officer in pursuit. After
losing the two men, the officer removed the keys from the vehicle and
additional units including Sheriff's Deputies converged on the scene.
While the search for the driver and passenger was underway, an officer
inventoried the vehicle and identified the owner. A family member was
contacted and the driver was identified, reports state, as Ricardo
Smith, 23, of Johnston.
A short time later he turned himself in to authorities and was charged
with driving under suspension, speeding 45 / 30 and Failure to stop for
blue lights. He was booked into custody at the Edgefield County
His passenger, according to incident reports released on Monday, has
not been identified at this time.
