Driver and Passenger Flee Traffic Stop on Foot: Driver Arrested

web posted April 5, 2011

JOHNSTON – A Johnston Police Officer on patrol Saturday just after noon spotted a grey Mercury 4-door traveling on Edisto Street exceeding the speed limit by 15 mph. When the officer turned around and attempted to stop the car the driver refused to stop the chase was on.

The driver turned on to Calhoun Street, running a stop sign, and then turned on to Bland Avenue. A short distance later the driver and a passenger jumped from the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

The two men ran towards Aiken Avenue with the officer in pursuit. After losing the two men, the officer removed the keys from the vehicle and additional units including Sheriff's Deputies converged on the scene.

While the search for the driver and passenger was underway, an officer inventoried the vehicle and identified the owner. A family member was contacted and the driver was identified, reports state, as Ricardo Smith, 23, of Johnston.

A short time later he turned himself in to authorities and was charged with driving under suspension, speeding 45 / 30 and Failure to stop for blue lights. He was booked into custody at the Edgefield County Detention Center.

His passenger, according to incident reports released on Monday, has not been identified at this time.
