JOHNSTON
- Currently,
welding jobs in the CSRA are going
unfilled due to lack of training
in the field. ECSD’s Adult
Education Program is offering a
Welding night class at Strom
Thurmond Career and Technology
Center starting February 11, 2019.
“My students will gain the skills
to get them in the door to a great
career if they work hard. Students
who took the night class last time
are making a living now welding,”
explained Bill Cheatham, Welding
teacher.
According to the Occupational
Outlook Handbook (2017), average
welders make $19. 35 per hour with
a high school diploma at an entry
level position.
The class is open to adults and
high school students. “Adult
learners have to enroll in Adult
Education because we are funded
though Adult Education from the
state,” said Vickie Butler, ECSD
Adult Education Director. Students
must take the WIN, which a career
readiness assessment used by most
businesses and industries to
determine who to hire.
For students who not considered as
an adult education participant,
the course cost $200. There is a
$50 registration fee for all
seeking to participate in this
dynamic career opportunity. The
registration covers all the
materials, supplies and textbooks
needed for the class.
