Piedmont Tech Welcomes Students with Enhanced Orientation Program
web posted July 29, 2010
GREENWOOD – Entering college can be intimidating.
Piedmont Technical College is working to make that transition a little
easier with an improved and expanded orientation program. New student
orientation is not a new concept at Piedmont Tech, according to Cindy
Klauck, director of counseling. But following a recent conference,
members of the counseling team came back with ideas for enhancing the
current format.
“Nearly every post-secondary institution recognizes the need to provide
information and training to incoming students in order to continuously
improve retention rates,” said Klauck. “We determined that if we can
provide information to counteract the reasons students don’t complete
their program of study, then we should see an increase in the number of
students staying in school.”
The new format begins with offering not one orientation session
at the beginning of the semester, but five. Students are divided based
on their intended program of study. All students are given information
about college services, financial aid, tips for success and
demonstrations on the use of electronic campus resources. Then, they
are taken to meet faculty and tour classrooms and labs in their
specific program area.
“We believe that if we lay a good foundation of knowledge for our
incoming students, they can more easily build upon it to complete
classes toward an associate degree, diploma or certificate,” said
Janean Reish, nursing support counselor.
Expanded orientation sessions are planned for the beginning of each
semester. According to Klauck, continued growth in student retention is
the goal.
“Our goal isn’t just to get students in the door, but to help them to
successfully complete their program of study and go on to either
continue their education at the four-year college level or to enter
successful career fields,” Reish said. “If we fail to prepare our
students at the starting line, we cannot expect to see them cross the
finish line.”
