Amanda Whatley Owen Named As Columnist for "Mandy's Friendly Garden"

web posted October 16, 2017

OwenGARDENING Edgefield Daily is proud to welcome Amanda Whatley Owen in her new, weekly column titled, "Mandy's Friendly Garden".  Not only will it feature tips on caring for your plants, but also how to design planters.  Mandy will also introduce us to new and trendy species, and show us how to incorporate flowers into life events such as birthdays, weddings, and proms.  Her subjects will include wreaths, centerpieces, and crafts that gravitate around floral work.  There will be tips for lawn care, vegetable gardens, and spice gardens, pest control, and composting.

Mandy is currently a horticulturist on the Landscape Team at Sage Valley Golf  Course.  Her focus there is annual plant design throughout the course and clubhouse.  She is also called upon to assist with the clubs floral work because of her background as the owner of "The Floral Bar" which specializes in floral work for weddings and more.

The Floral Bar does landscape design, outdoor & indoor container design and installation.  They were sponsors for the recent Aiken Trials, where their rental plants adorned the VIP tent.  Mandy's love for arranging has led her business to offer a wide variety of craft items such as wreaths, diaper cakes, and more.

Mandy is a proud 2011 graduate of Strom Thurmond High School where she gained a love of horticulture as an officer in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) directed by Dr. Darla Steele.  She competed on a number of teams, and in the summer of 2010, completed the S.C. Commissioner's School of Agriculture at Clemson University.

From 2011-2014, Mandy worked at Home Depot as a Lawn and Garden Specialist gaining practical experience while she attended Augusta Technical College.  In 2014, she earned an Associates degree in Applied Technical Management with a diploma in Horticulture.  She also earned a certificate as a Nursery and Greenhouse Technician and another certificate in Landscape Specialist.

Mandy currently resides in Jackson, S.C. with her husband Will, and their two dogs, Gabe and Blue.

Writing a column is a new challenge for this energetic young lady.  But we are sure her passion for her profession, combined with her enthusiastic personality, will make her a great resource for our gardening column.  If you have a specific topic or question you would like to have addressed or answered, send it to edgefielddaily@att.net.  Mandy is looking forward to questions from readers as she builds beautiful gardens and friendships.
