Edgefield names flowerbed on town square for Charlie Mathis

web posted May 6, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Town Council, Mayor Ken Durham, and a crowd of onlookers gathered on the Town Square Monday afternoon to unveil a marker naming one of the new flowerbeds in honor of Charles “Charlie” Mathis. Mr. Mathis, soon to be turning 94, was a local merchant and also served on the Town Council for 34 years. He also grew and donated all the Day Lilies used in the replanting of the square. “We felt it was only fitting to name one of the beds for you,” Mayor Ken Durham said.

Before the unveiling, Mayor Durham presented Mr. Mathis with a pair of Edgefield lapel pins and a Town of Edgefield flag. The Mayor then directed everyone’s attention to the marker as he removed the covering and exposed the hand painted sign that read, “Day Lilies grown and donated by Charles T. “Charlie” Mathis Local Merchant Town Council 34 years.

Mr. Mathis smiled widely as the gathered crowd of local merchants and town’s people began clapping and snapping pictures.
