Edgefield Police arrest one, others sought in racing 4-wheelers
web
posted May 6, 2008
EDGEFIELD – A report of several people
racing on the roadways on four-wheelers on Buckeye Street and Dogwood
Lane brought Edgefield Police to the area. A short time later officers
observed three subjects on four-wheelers racing along Dogwood Lane and
clocked one of the individuals at 49 MPH on a roadway posted at 25 MPH.
When an Edgefield Town Policeman tried to pull over the offending
racers they fled and a pursuit followed.
One of the riders disregarded a stop sign at Dogwood Lane and Jeter
Street and then headed west on Jeter Street as he fled down a dirt road
and then crashed and began fleeing on foot.
As officers covered the area a 4-wheeler involved was found at a home
on the 500 block of Silverbell Street. At first the owner stated that
the ATV was inoperable but when officers touched the motor is was
obvious it had been recently driven.
It was discovered that the rider, Michael Thompson Jr., 31, was driving
the ATV and he was placed under arrest for an outstanding warrant.
Annetta Harris, of Jeter Street was cited for allowing an uninsured
vehicle to be driven on public roads.
The 4-wheeler was taken to the county impound lot along with the second
crashed ATV.
It was later determined that Gene Kennedy Rouse, 32, was the driver of
the crashed ATV and a warrant for his arrest was issued.
The case is still under investigation and additional arrests are
possible.
