Edgefield County Council May meeting
web
posted May 6, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Council
held their monthly meeting Tuesday night with a full agenda and three
public hearings. The public hearings were held on the proposed budget
ordinance, updating the building codes, and the purchase of the
Calliham property.
There were no speakers during the first two public hearings; however,
Bob Ramsey did have questions on the purchase of the property. The
first was the county going to be liable for maintenance of the Calliham
building that would still be used by Mr. Calliham. County Administrator
John Pettigrew said that under the agreement that Mr. Calliham would be
responsible for repairs to the building used by the store as long as he
operated his business.
A second question, directed at Chairman Monroe Kneece, concerned what
the county would do with the Church Street property since the county
was moving forward with the purchase. Chairman Kneece stated that he
proposed to sell the property by putting it up for auction. He said it
would be best to wait until the real estate market improves before
doing so.
With no further questions the public hearing closed and the county
council them voted to pass second readings on all three ordinances.
EMA Director Mike Casey gave the council an update on the north radio
tower and requested permission to move forward with preliminary studies
that will have to take place before a new tower could be built at the
Star Road location. Mr. Casey said that his office is working on grants
that can be used to offset the cost and that roughly $60,000 in grants
could be forthcoming. Council approved to have the studies done.
Mr. Casey also addressed a “skip” that is being picked up on the fire
radio channel. “There is not a lot we can do,” Mr. Casey said, adding
that he had technicians check the equipment and everything is
performing at or above specifications.
The council then moved on to accepting bids on service contracts. The
first was for janitorial services. Chairman Kneece stated that there
have been many complaints by the current provider. Atlanta Building
Maintenance was low bid at $75,790 and was voted to receive the new
contract.
Cutting Edge was the low bidder for grounds maintenance at $10,990,
which was approved by the council. David Parker Exterminating was the
only bidder for pest control and the $3,600 contract was approved.
Next on the agenda was consideration for bids on the repainting of the
courthouse. Clerk of Court Shirley Newby addressed the county council
saying that there was a wide range in the bids. The lowest bid received
was $7,200 with a majority between $30,988 up to $67,500.
Chairman Kneece instructed Mike Reed, Building Director, to get
specifications on the bids received. The bids were taken in as
information and will be reviewed again next month.
After an executive session the county council returned to public and
Chairman Kneece stated the county is in the running for a company
looking to relocate. With no other business the meeting was adjourned.
