County Administrator Brown Terminated "Effective Immediately"

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Council held an extended executive session following Tuesday night's regular meeting and emerged and terminated County Administrator Alton Brown, "effective immediately". Brown came out from the closed door meeting, slammed his books down before conversing with staff, and then left before the council members came back to public some fifteen minutes later and made the vote.

According to Chairman Dean Campbell, Brown will receive pay for his required 30 day notice and then an additional 90 days as stipulated in his contract. Chairman Campbell explained that under the contract it was necessary to make the payments in order to make the termination immediate.

Brown was unavailable for a comment after the meeting since he left before the council returned to public.

Councilman Rodney Ashcraft made the motion to terminate Brown which was seconded by Vice-chairwoman Genia Blackwell. The vote followed with Ashcraft, Blackwell, and Campbell voting in favor and Councilman Willie Bright abstaining. Councilman Dorn left the meeting during the executive session.

With the termination behind them, Chairman Campbell stated he would like to add a called meeting of the council on April 11 at 6 pm to discuss locating and hiring an "interim" administrator until a new administrator can be advertised for and the interview process completed.

A budget work session will be held the same night.

With no other business the meeting was adjourned.
