Two arrested after alleged burglary interrupted by homeowner
web
posted May 8, 2008
BETTIS ACADEMY –
Metal thefts are becoming
more prevalent as scrap metal prices continue to rise and a Bettis
Academy man knows that better than anyone does. In the last two days,
his property on the 1400 block of Bettis Academy Road has been targeted
for theft and at least $3800 worth a car parts, engines, and rims were
taken. On Wednesday he felt a little better when he caught a man and a
woman parked behind the home with scrap metal in the truck bed and
called 911 just after 1 pm.
The homeowner said he approached the couple and asked what they were
doing, “and they told me they was looking for scrap metal.” He said
that in the theft reported the day before a white truck was seen behind
the home and the two were driving a white truck. “Their keys were lying
on the seat of the truck so I picked them up and walked to the street”
and had someone call the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and
Investigators arrived on the scene a short time later and
began interviewing all parties involved. In the bed of the truck were
various carburetors, car parts, and other scrap metal.
The couple (pictured above), Shelly Griffen, 26, of Hopewell Virginia,
and John E. Elridge,
25, of Grovetown Georgia, were arrested on the scene. Sheriff’s
Investigators said the two would be placed on a custody hold while they
sought warrants for burglary in the third degree.
A search of the truck after arrest led to the discovery of several
vehicle tags from the state of Virginia (above).
Both are being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center awaiting
formal charges and a bond hearing. At this time it is unknown if the
theft from the day before is related to the arrests on Wednesday.
