18-year-old mother killed as child and passengers survive deadly crash

web posted July 28, 2010

AIKEN – An 18-year-old Monetta woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a single vehicle crash on Old Shoals Road just after 7 pm Tuesday night. Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said Tiffany Furtick was partially ejected in the crash and died from multiple body trauma when the Ford Escort rolled and landed on the driver’s side, killing Furtick.

Ms. Furtick’s 2-year-old son, who was restrained in a car seat, survived the crash, as did two other passengers who were also restrained by seatbelts. “Ms. Furtick was the only person in the vehicle not wearing a seatbelt,” Coroner Carlton said.

The crash took place as Ms. Furtick was traveling south on Old Shoals Road when she lost control of her 1999 Ford Escort and it left the roadway. The small SUV struck an embankment and rolled causing the vehicle to land on the driver’s side of the vehicle in which Ms. Furtick was partially ejected resulting in her death.

The death is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Coroner’s Office and marks the 18th death on Aiken County Roads this year.

No cause of the crash was available and toxicology results are pending, Carlton said.
